how to choose your maternity photographer?

Pregnancy is a beginning of an incredible journey into motherhood filled with love, anticipation and dreams about your precious, tiny baby growing inside you.

As a mum of twin daughters and a maternity photographer with over 5 years of experience, I understand first hand how important this time of your life is and I know that capturing your pregnancy in a right way will make those moments last a lifetime in your heart and in your baby’s eyes when they get older.

Choosing the right photographer for your maternity photos can be a difficult task, you need to make sure they get you and your vision and communicate in the way that make sense to you.

In this blog, I will give you some tips on what to check before booking your pregnancy photoshoot. Whether it is an intimate nude, fine art maternity portrait, a lifestyle outdoor session or a fashion style, glamorous shoot, this blog will give you some clarity on how to find your perfect match.

Why choosing the right maternity photographer is so Important?

Pregnancy, even though 9 months may seem like a long time, it’s actually not that long. Days, weeks and months will pass quickly and the window for maternity photoshoot is only so short (between 27th and 34th week of pregnancy). Once your baby is born, you won’t get those memories of your bump back. That’s why choosing a professional maternity photographer is crucial.

The right photographer will showcase your pregnancy glow and the special bond you share with your baby. They will create timeless keepsakes to reflect on this beautiful chapter of your life.

How to find your dream maternity photographer?

Determine what style of photography do you like.

  • Do you like an outdoor shoot in a beautiful location or a cosy studio session?

  • With outdoor maternity shoot, do you like being surrounded by nature, like a forest, meadow, hill or being on a beach or maybe you prefer an urban style?

  • With the studio maternity session, what type is your favourite? Boho? Elegant? Fashion? Semi-nude? Traditional? Glamour?

  • Do you like a lifestyle photography which focuses on genuine moments and interactions and aims to capture people in real-life situations and everyday environments? Or do you prefer a timeless and classic feel to the photos, where the photographer guide you through the poses and makes sure every detail is perfect?

Ask yourself, what outcome would you like form this maternity photoshoot?

  • Do you only need a few pictures to share on your social media?

  • Or perhaps you want beautiful wall art to be proudly displayed in your home?

  • Or maybe you would love to have a beautiful album full of photographs of your bump?

What’s your budget. Yes, this one is very important!

  • How much are you willing to spend on your maternity photoshoot?

  • How much are you planning to spend on the products? (wall art, albums, prints etc.)

  • What do you want to be included in that investment? (the number of photos, prints, wardrobe, props etc.)

  • Would you like the photographer to offer a payment plan?

  • Do you consider having a newborn photoshoot as well? Some photographers offer a baby plan where you pay less if you book both maternity and newborn photoshoot with them.

Once you answered all the above questions, it’s time to reach out to the potential photographers in your area.

  • You can use Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or even TikTok to search for local maternity photographers.

  • Always check if they have a website. Professional photographers (in my opinion) should have a website.

  • Look through their social media, see what they post and write about. Do they show themselves and their personality? Do you like what they post?

  • Check their portfolio and see if you like their photography and editing style. Can you imagine being captured by them? If so,

  • Schedule a consultation call or a meeting face to face with them. This is the best way to find out if they are your kind of person.
